Vacancies rose again in May – MBIE Jobs Online Report
The number of job vacancies rose by 2.4 per cent in May 2016, and by 13.4 per cent over the year, according to the latest Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) Jobs Online report.
The hospitality and tourism industry experienced a strong rise in vacancy numbers in May (up 1.9 per cent).
Occupation groups with the largest increases were machinery drivers and operators (up 3.6 per cent) and labourers (up 3.4 per cent).
MBIE’s Labour Market Trends Manager, David Paterson says vacancies increased across all ten regions in May. The biggest increases were seen in the Bay of Plenty (up 3.0 per cent) and Nelson/Tasman/Marlborough/West Coast (1.9 per cent) followed closely by Auckland, Otago/Southland and Waikato (all up 1.7 per cent).
“Bay of Plenty has seen a particularly sharp increase in its vacancies since May 2015, a trend that reflects the expanding economy and growing employment in the region,” Mr Paterson says.
