Mazda drives awareness for Prostate Cancer Foundation

Mazda New Zealand know all too well the importance of a regular service to keep your vehicle running well – and the same goes for your body.

Which is why the company is proud to support the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand’s annual Blue September campaign to raise awareness about the importance of having a regular health check.

Andrew Clearwater, Managing Director of Mazda New Zealand, says the company wanted to do its bit to let Kiwi guys know how easy it is to have a check-up and help prevent what is a deadly disease.

“It’s just like getting a regular service or warrant of fitness for your car, only far more important because prostate cancer is the most common cancer affecting Kiwi males,” he says.

During Blue September, for every Face Your Fear donation made, Mazda NZ will knock $6 off the reserve of a brand new Mazda3 GSX worth $35,595. That’s $6 for the 600 lives lost each year to prostate cancer. This beauty will be auctioned on Trade Me on September 26, with the proceeds donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Mazda have also partnered with The Edge radio station where listeners have the chance to vote for who – out of Jay Jay, Randell or Dom – they want to see face their fear in The Edge's Face Your Fears Week during Blue September.

This year’s Blue September campaign asks the New Zealand public to face their fears and challenge their friends and family to do the same. Throughout September people can also text to vote for a well-known Kiwi bloke to face his fear.

Mr Clearwater says it’s a great campaign because it’s something all New Zealanders can relate to.

“Everyone has their fears – everything from spiders and heights, through to water and barking dogs. Everyone’s scared of something but as Blue September wants to show, a prostate check should not be one of them.

“It’s easy, quick and it could save your life. It’s as simple as having a blood test to start the process,” he says.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation wants to encourage Kiwi men to take more responsibility for their prostate health, starting from the time they turn 40 and especially if there is family history of this disease.

Statistics show 1 in 10 New Zealand males develop prostate cancer in their lifetime and for many men the symptoms are detected too late because a basic check-up was not done.
