Historic double win at National Competition

Media Release – Dunedin Homebrewer takes out historic double win at National Competition

Dunedin homebrewer Jamie McQuillan won both the Champion Beer and Champion Brewer awards in the 10th annual SOBA National Homebrew Competition.

Jamie's Berliner Weiss with Brettanomyces and Greengage Plums scored 49/50, and his overall medal count gave him the Champ Brewer award too. This is the first time one brewer has collected both top prizes.

The Competition was judged on Saturday 5th November at The Fine Wine Delivery Company in Mairangi Bay, Auckland. Held for the 10th time, the Competition had 711 entries, an impressive 32% increase on last year. Judges awarded 16 Gold Medals, 69 Silvers and 97 Bronzes.

Organised by the Society of Beer Advocates (SOBA), the Competition is both the biggest and most-respected homebrewing competition in New Zealand. SOBA President Maree Shaw says the growth in entries reflects the growing interested in quality beer.

“SOBA itself turns ten this year, and the constantly growing fascination with good beer all over New Zealand is exciting to be a part of. It’s also very pleasing that both top prizes in our 10th National Homebrew Competition have been taken out by one talented brewer.”

Jamie wins two opportunities to make commercial brews – one at Hallertau Brewery in north-west Auckland, and another at Brewaucracy Brewing in Hamilton.

SOBA would like to thank head judge Geoff Griggs, and the many volunteers who held to judge, present the beers and collate the results. The 2016 National Homebrew Competition was sponsored by Hallertau Brewing, Brewaucracy, Brew Shop Home Brew Beer Supplies, The Grainfather All Grain Brewing, Cryer Malt, New Zealand Hops, The Beer Spot, Fine Wine Delivery, and Brewers Coop.
