Sharp NZ aims for 100% recycling

2.5 million kilograms of additional waste to be recycled by 2018

Auckland – Sharp New Zealand adopts new waste minimisation initiatives as part of the Minister for the Environment’s Product Stewardship Scheme that will see the company reuse and recycle an additional 2.5 million kilograms of waste.

Sharp New Zealand (Sharp) is one of only a handful of New Zealand companies who has achieved the accreditation which the Minister for the Environment, Hon. Dr Nick Smith, will present to Sharp today in Auckland.

Sharp is the 14th company to be awarded with the accreditation which serves as recognition and endorsement for schemes that meet waste and environmental harm reduction.

The accreditation shows Sharp’s real commitment in reducing its environmental footprint. By taking part in the Product Stewardship Scheme, Sharp will prevent hazardous chemicals, electronics and plastics going to landfill.

Under the Stewardship Scheme Sharp aims to recycle 100% of all packaging materials, electrical and electronic products and equipment, obsolete and used parts by April 2018. This will result in significant volumes of waste being diverted from landfill all over New Zealand.

The Product Stewardship accreditation means Sharp accepts full responsibility for reducing the environmental impacts of all its products in every stage of their lifecycle from production to end of life.

The scheme incorporates recycling of all of the company’s electrical and electronic products and equipment. It also includes product that is returned to Sharp and is used internally. All multifunction and consumer electronics products will be assessed to see if they can be reused or recycled. If they can be reused they are repaired and sold second-hand. The remaining products will be recycled.

The Scheme will also reduce the leaching of the plastics from packaging and the hazardous substances caused by the breakdown of circuit boards, plastics and other electrical and electronic components.
