Focal Point Cinemas Announce the Location of Their New Palmerston North Cinema

The long awaited answer to the question of where will the new Focal Point Cinema and Café be located in Palmerston North can now be revealed. The new boutique cinema will occupy the entire building situated at 217-219 Cuba Street.

Focal Point Cinema business owners Matt and Julie Bell are delighted to finally announce the site.

“We are excited to announce that our new Focal Point Cinema and Café will be located on Cuba Street close to the vibrancy of George Street,” says Matt.

“As many people will be aware the building has a somewhat colourful past however it will look totally different when we are finished as it will have an elegant façade and beautiful interior décor,” says Julie

The project will involve some internal demolition work and a full refit of the building, including a new façade, four boutique size theatres of differing sizes, a commercial kitchen, a licensed cafe and a first floor function room. The building will also have a high seismic rating once the work is complete.

“Our ground floor café will link to the existing street scape of the area and our first floor function room will have appealing views down George Street,” says Matt.

A long term lease agreement between Focal Point Palmerston North Ltd and the building owner will also see both parties contribute to the development of the property. Commercial leasing and sales agent Lynette Love from Property Brokers has spent many hours brokering the agreement and managing the process of relocating the existing tenant.

The Bells are not daunted by the scale of this project as this will be the fourth time they have completed a major cinema development and refit project. Focal Point Cinemas have already successfully developed and now operate cinemas in Feilding, Levin and Hastings.

The same collaborative approach of both property owner and tenant contributing to the project has proven successful for both the Levin and Hastings Focal Point Cinema projects.

“Both us and the building owner are looking forward to seeing this Cinema development become a reality as we both share the same vision for the site and have already developed a good working relationship” says Matt.

The Feilding-based couple expect the Palmerston North Focal Point to be operational in late 2017, and anticipate employing 15 - 20 staff.
