Interest in bus driving jobs hits high gear

More than 175 people have applied for bus driving jobs with Tranzurban after only a week of roles being advertised.

Tranzurban, part of the Tranzit Group, will operate a big part of the new Metlink urban bus network from July in collaboration with Greater Wellington Regional Council.

Following a series of public seminars in Wellington and the Hutt Valley late last year, where hundreds learned about Tranzurban and available career opportunities, there was strong interest when recruitment began last week with a campaign featuring Hurricanes and All Blacks wing Julian “The Bus” Savea.

“The seminars gave people the chance to see for themselves what a career with Tranzurban is all about,” said Tranzit Group managing director Paul Snelgrove.

“The level of interest shown at our seminars was really impressive, and it’s continued through with the high number of formal applications for driving jobs that we’ve received.”

Tranzurban is seeking 300 drivers to operate its brand new fleet of electric and low-emission diesel buses when it takes over the bulk of urban commuter routes in July.

Mr Snelgrove said applicants came from a wide range of backgrounds.

“We’ve got applications from young people starting out in their careers through to people returning to the industry or wanting a change of pace with flexible work opportunities in semi-retirement. We’ve also had lots of interest from experienced bus drivers who are keen to join the Tranzurban team.

“We also worked with community and job placement organisations to highlight opportunities to get beneficiaries into the workforce and more women into bus driving roles.

“We’re thrilled with the interest in our first week of advertising for drivers across Wellington. There has been considerable interest from outside of the industry and we ask that anyone who is keen for a role to contact our HR team on 0800 200 018 or hr@tranzurban.co.nz now and not leave it too late. We only have a limited number of positions available at each depot.”
