Elegant Bathrooms And Clever Kitchens Reign Supreme

Elegant Bathroom Forms And Clever Kitchen Functions Reign Supreme

Stunning contemporary kitchens and bathrooms, brought to life by clever design and exceptional manufacturing, were hailed Supreme Winners by the National Kitchen & Bathroom Association (NKBA) – NZ Excellence in Design Awards held on Saturday night (18 August).

Every year, the NKBA Awards recognise and celebrate exceptional and innovative kitchen and bathroom design and manufacturing by NKBA members.

A breathtaking Milan inspired bespoke kitchen, saw designer Leonie Metge of Cube 3 Cabinetry in Auckland win five national awards on the night, including the prestigious Supreme Kitchen Design 2018 Award. Located in Karaka Lakes in Auckland, with a locale in the home that takes in expansive views of its beautiful surrounds, the award-winning kitchen employs a compelling design with a striking cantilevered limestone benchtop as the ultimate centrepiece.

The synergy between kitchen and surrounds is seamless with the introduction of handcrafted vertical timber, stained textured veneer, and flat plate stainless steel. The outstanding workmanship demonstrated also earned Cube 3 Cabinetry the Supreme Kitchen Manufacturer 2018 Award, with the judges describing the work as well executed behind the scenes.

“Sleek and succinctly designed.”

An outstanding design, by Ingrid Geldof of Ingrid Geldof Design in Canterbury, commanded the judges’ attention, taking away four of the top national awards, including the highly esteemed Supreme Bathroom Design 2018 Award, with Geldof’s entries also earning her Designer of the Year for 2018. Respectfully honouring the overarching style story of the elegant, Georgian-Style home it resides within, the plush ensuite achieves a grand aesthetic. A sparkling chandelier hangs dramatically above an inset bath and works in unison with LED strip lighting to create a sophisticated mood.

The Supreme Bathroom Manufacturer 2018 Award was awarded to Advanced Joinery for its work on this ensuite with the judges acknowledging the outstanding manufacturing and detail.

“This bathroom has been perfectly crafted with clever spatial design. It has an appealing use of symmetry.”

Further to the overall Supreme Awards, a Supreme Kitchen Design Runner-up 2018 Award was won by a contemporary kitchen by Toni Roberts of Kitchen Architecture that honours the industrial and natural materiality of its home. A custom-stainless steel ventilation cabinet, a rugged granite bench chosen for its tactical feel and natural character, and practical storage systems are special features in a kitchen that celebrates contemporary conveniences and family connections.

A bathroom design by Emma Morris of Eterno Design was also met with acclaim on the night winning the Supreme Bathroom Design Runner-up 2018 Award. The architectural master ensuite makes a powerful impression with its dramatically high-pitched ceiling and comparatively low ceilings, all within the same space. The luxurious design, specifically tailored to its owners’ requirements, involves grande floating oval mirror cupboards, bespoke design cabinetry in a high gloss black lacquer finish, and a dramatically tiled shower with a low ceiling that creates a spa-like dwelling.

Additional national award winners from across the country were Daniel Timmer of DBJ Furniture, Jordan Dale of Gold Kitchens, Emma Gourdie of Lume Design, Annika Rowson of Rowson Kitchens, Michael Murray of Kitchen Studio Hamilton, Sarah Yeates of HK Kitchens, Shane George of Kitchens by Design, Vicki Andrews of Vicki Andrews Design, Natalie Du Bois of Du Bois Design, Colleen Holder of Colleen Holder Design and Rachel Wilcox of Kitchen Dynamics.

President of NKBA, Annemarie Mains, said the awards showcase the crème de la crème of kitchens and bathrooms in New Zealand.

“Kitchens and bathrooms are often the most expensive rooms in the home to create. It is an investment and so quality design and build is vital to ensuring the result exceeds expectations. Kitchens are after all the heart of many homes. Families all over New Zealand congregate around the kitchen every night to socialise and eat. They are a hive of activity. Designing these special spaces is an honour and our designers get so much joy out of creating a place that is functional, beautiful but also about creating connections,” says Mains.
