Digital Media Industry works with Tertiary to produce job-ready graduates

Auckland based company FutureYou bridges the gap between tertiary education and industry practices by recruiting and training graduates with job-ready skills for entry level roles in the Digital Media Industry. These are for companies such as Media Publishers, Sales Networks, Media Agencies and Digital Marketers who in many cases have severe skill shortages due to explosive growth in online advertising.

Its part-time training programme runs for 9 weeks and covers most of the rudiments of Online Advertising. For the past year it has been working in partnership with the University of Auckland’s Career Development and Employability Services (CDES) which leads three of the twelve modules. The relationship is a great example of how industry and the University are collaborating to help meet their respective business goals. “We are very pleased to be working with Futureyou to develop a programme that will assist students in gaining valuable new skills that will help address a need in the digital media industry,” said Catherine Stephens, Manager of CDES.

While Futureyou concentrates on day-to-day practices, the University focuses on soft skills such as time management, business communication and self-learning. Director Michael Te Young believes that soft skills are probably even more important than hard ones because they are skills for life. He says “Even though experience and skills are a vital components to career progression, you look at what really makes someone successful and that’s their personal attributes. It’s the ability to manage yourself and work effectively with others and that’s what our partnership with the University of Auckland is all about”.

Futureyou works with the CDES to recruit students however part of the challenge is that the media industry is not widely known. Te Young says “Everyone knows an ad when they see one but very few understand how it got there. It’s an exciting part of Marketing and Advertising but a best kept secret so we first have to promote the industry and the various jobs and career paths available before we can recruit”.

In a time where employment is low the skills shortage is a major issue in numerous sectors including media. It makes internal training challenging because in many cases, it has to be conducted by managers who are already under intense pressure. Better prepared graduates, means they can hit the ground running. The programme gives students a window into the Digital Media industry, helping them to build general workplace skills as well as niche capabilities. Students have an additional skillset to offer employers that positions them well for future employment and the industry gains a pool of more qualified and work-ready talent.
