Enjoy a taste of New Zealand’s homegrown talent with The Wine Auction Room

An impressive array of New Zealand wines, many of them now hard to find, will go under the hammer at The Wine Auction Room’s next live auction on 8 May.

With the month of May all about supporting local talent, The Wine Auction Room is also celebrating NZ Music Month and will donate a percentage of the auction profits to The Crescendo Trust of Aotearoa, a non-for-profit charity that mentors disengaged youth through music, film, photography and communications.

Featuring a wide variety of predominantly New Zealand wines, including some rare vintages, the auction is on Wednesday 8 May at Glengarry, Victoria Park, Auckland. It starts at 6:00 pm and will be streamed live on www.wineauctionroom.com

Owner and auctioneer Reece Warren says: “There is magic to winemaking. Like music, it is a creative expression, it is an art form. And we have some truly spectacular wines in this auction.”

“New Zealand has a reasonably short but very successful history with winemaking, especially Pinot Noir. It started developing in the 1990s and, over the past 30 years, has become our second most-planted variety. New Zealand wines, such as the legendary 1998 Te Mata Coleraine, are now highly-regarded at an international level - and we have some up for auction next week.”

Leading Australian wine critic Huon Hooke has said: “Coleraine is arguably New Zealand’s greatest red wine.”

As the son of legendary Kiwi music promoter Phil Warren, Reece grew up in the New Zealand music scene. “It’s always been a big part of my life, as has wine. Great Kiwi talent is often recognised offshore earlier than it is here, but superb local talent - whether it’s in music or winemaking - is something we Kiwis need to celebrate more,” says Reece.

“From 1998 Esk Valley The Terraces to 2000 Pegasus Bay Aria Riesling, our May live auction will have wines for all budgets and tastes. Interestingly, we rescued some of these amazing wines as they were destined for the drain! The family had no interest in wine and the parent who purchased them no longer drinks. They’re in great condition as they’ve been stored in a cool, dark environment.”
