Storm Disrupts Power Supply Across Southern Networks
PowerNet is urging customers across its networks to prepare for the possibility of extended power outages, following stormy weather overnight and into today.
Three of PowerNet’s managed networks - The Power Company Limited, OtagoNet, and Electricity Invercargill Limited - have experienced significant disruption, affecting supply to thousands of customers across the lower South Island.
PowerNet Acting Chief Executive David Stevens said safety remained the top priority as restoration efforts continue.
“In anticipation of the forecast weather, PowerNet put on extra field staff and contractors over the weekend. Our teams have been working hard to restore power to affected customers today, in challenging conditions. Safe restoration of supply is our priority right now, but there have been a lot of weather-related faults to manage. Our teams have been prioritising feeder faults first so we can get the largest number of customers back on,” Mr Stevens said.
“Crews will wrap up work at nightfall, as it becomes more difficult - and less safe - to carry out repairs in the dark. It's also important we manage fatigue and support the wellbeing of our teams. Our PowerNet staff and contractors have done an outstanding job today, and we’ve had a number of messages from the community acknowledging their efforts, which is great to see.
“Work will continue at first light tomorrow, but some customers may remain without power into Monday. We’re asking everyone - especially those who are medically dependent—to plan for that possibility and make any necessary arrangements,” he said.
Mr Stevens thanked customers for their patience and reminded them to treat all downed lines as live,
If you are without power and have not yet reported that to PowerNet, please call our team on 0800 808 587.
