Clutha Development Launches Funding Boost For Local Entrepreneurs

Clutha Development is pleased to announce the launch of the Microgrant programme, designed to support locals with early-stage business ideas and give them the boost needed to take the next step towards turning those ideas into reality.

The Clutha Development Microgrant will provide funding ranging from $500 to $1,500 to help applicants overcome barriers such as prototyping, market research, branding, or testing new services.

“Our goal is to encourage people in the Clutha District to take action on those ideas that have been sitting in the back of their minds,” said Sarah Hayward, Economic Development Manager at Clutha Development. “Sometimes, all it takes is a small push to get moving — and that is what this microgrant is designed to provide.”

Clutha Development acknowledges the success of Start Up Dunedin’s microgrant programme, which inspired this local initiative. “We are grateful to the Start Up Dunedin team for sharing their experience and demonstrating just how powerful these small grants can be for grassroots innovation,” Hayward said.

The programme is being delivered in partnership with Coin South, with applicants able to access Activator sessions as part of the application process. These sessions are designed to provide expert guidance and practical support to help applicants shape their ideas and prepare strong applications.

Funding is available to individuals and teams who:

• Live in the Clutha District

• Have a clear business idea and plan to test or trial

• Are ready to give their idea a go

Applications open on 30 July 2025, closing on 8 September. Full details and application forms will be available on the Clutha Development website.

“This is the first time we have offered the Microgrant, and we are excited to see the creative and practical ideas that emerge from our community,” Hayward said. “Whether it is testing a prototype, launching a service, or developing a brand, this grant is about turning ideas into action and creating real momentum for our local entrepreneurs.”
