Government Investment In Major Events Welcomed, And Long-Term Solution Still Needed
Tātaki Auckland Unlimited welcomes the Government’s increased investment in major events, calling it a “significant step forward” that will strengthen Auckland’s ability to attract and deliver world-class experiences for the region and the country.
“This investment is a significant step forward and fantastic news for Auckland,” says Annie Dundas, Director Destination at Tātaki Auckland Unlimited. “It’s a strong signal that New Zealand is serious about competing for world-class events, and Auckland is ready to lead that charge.
“Importantly, these funds show the Government recognises the critical role major events play in stimulating the economy. It gives us greater firepower to attract events that not only bring international visitors and economic benefits to the region but also reflect the unique identity of Tāmaki Makaurau and enhance community spirit.
“It will also be welcome news for music promoters and venues, who until now haven’t had access to government funding of this kind.”
The Events Boost Fund, administered by New Zealand Major Events (MBIE), has $10 million available nationally to support events taking place in the 2026 calendar year. The fund has a dual focus: generating international visitation and economic activity in the short term, while promoting New Zealand as a world-class events and tourism destination in the long term.
Applications are open from 15 to 30 September 2025. All Auckland region applications need to include a letter of support from Tātaki Auckland Unlimited and must demonstrate a minimum 25% financial contribution from local public funding.
To manage this process effectively, Tātaki Auckland Unlimited has issued a streamlined Expression of Interest (EOI) process to event promoters, venues, stadiums, and cultural organisations across Auckland. This enables early assessment of proposals and supports a coordinated regional response that aligns with both the objectives of the Events Boost Fund and Auckland’s event priorities.
“Tātaki Auckland Unlimited is working closely with industry partners to identify high-impact opportunities that align with the funding criteria and deliver strong outcomes for Auckland,” says Dundas.
A region-wide lens is being applied to ensure the events supported through this process contribute to economic, social, and cultural goals across Tāmaki Makaurau. Final applications are required to be submitted to MBIE by 30 September.
The Government’s announcement does not replace the $30 million events underwrite approved by Auckland Council earlier this month. The underwrite remains a critical mechanism to enable Auckland to confidently bid in a highly competitive international market and create a pipeline of future activity.
“While the new Government funding is a welcome and much-needed boost, it is time-limited and not guaranteed beyond the next two years,” says Dundas. “A long-term, sustainable funding model for major events remains a top priority for Auckland.”
