Local Talent On Display As Landscape Design Awards Return To Show Next Week
After a short hiatus, gardens will once again take centre stage at the Waikato Home & Garden Show when the gates open next week, as the Landscape Design Awards return with fresh energy and vision, set to inspire visitors. With over 18 years of tradition and responding to significant public interest, the Landscape Design Awards have consistently been a highlight, presenting innovative outdoor environments that exemplify creativity, skill, and landscaping excellence.

Waikato Home & Garden Show, Exhibition Director, Rebecca Hannah said that past landscape designers have described winning these awards as a defining milestone in their professional journey.
“The Landscape Design Awards have been the launchpad for many Kiwi designers and landscape businesses, making them household names and allowing them to connect with new clients”, she said.“To be able to offer this platform for both emerging and established landscape designers is something we are super proud of” adds Rebecca.
This year’s theme, “The Dreamer’s Haven.” celebrates tranquillity and imagination as the designers showcase their interpretation of outdoor living.
Visitors will be able to explore the designs on Garden Lane and vote for their favourite in the People’s Choice Award. The winner of the Judges’ Gold award will be announced at the show, 3 pm on Thursday, 2nd October. Chosen for their creativity, craftsmanship, and ability to bring bold ideas to life, the three designers showcasing their skills this year all hail from the Mighty Waikato.
Known for her serene, nature-inspired spaces with flowing forms and native planting, Kelly Mawston is the owner and principal designer at Design by Nature Landscapes. With over 15 years in the industry, a Fine Arts degree as well a Diploma in Landscape Design, Kelly’s work not only reflects her clients’ personalities and lifestyles but also harmonises with the natural environment.
Luke Eason is the project manager and lead designer at Visionscapes Landscape Design. He brings a bold, architectural style with sculptural elements and modern structure to his designs. A third-generation Landscaper with 19 years of experience under his belt, Luke has worked mostly in the Waikato, although he did spend some time across the ditch working on a project in the Royal Melbourne Gardens.

The third designer competing for this year’s acclaimed title is JG Landcare director, Jethro Giles. Originally an engineering student, Jethro has grown his business over the last 14 years, offering a range of landscaping solutions designed to enhance the beauty, functionality and structure of any outdoor space.

Together, these three reflect the innovation and diversity in their designs that define the New Zealand landscape design scene, yet all have their own distinct style.
Judges will assess each garden based on several key elements, including: the clarity of the design brief, interpretation of the theme “The Dreamer’s Haven”, overall presentation, and originality.
Special attention will be given to how well the garden creates a relaxing atmosphere through thoughtful product choices, and how effectively the design is executed within the $20,000 budget.
Renowned landscaper Bill Holden will lead the judging panel for the 2025 Landscape Design Awards. With decades of experience in landscape architecture and horticultural design, he is widely respected across New Zealand for his contributions to the industry. His work has shaped public spaces, private gardens, and educational initiatives, and he continues to mentor emerging talent through his involvement in professional associations and design education.

As well as seeing these amazing designs up close, visitors to the show can also enjoy the Resene Seminar Series, which features inspiring sessions on home, lifestyle, and outdoor living. A standout speaker in this year's series is Astar from Palmers. Well-known for her gardening segments on Good Morning and her own channel Astar’s Place, she will share her expert insights on seasonal planting and garden inspiration. Her engaging style and practical advice make her a favourite among garden enthusiasts, and her session is a must-see.
