An Auckland wedding photographer has transformed three of the city’s historic mansions into the setting of a modern-day fairytale. The project, called Once Upon A Time, brought together local talent, fashion, and heritage architecture to celebrate romance in timeless style.
The vision was inspired by the delicate magic of a musical box - the moment it opens, a ballerina spins, and music fills the air. With that feeling in mind, the shoot set out to weave beauty, style, and emotion into a series of photographs that read like a love poem.
The first chapter unfolded at Highwic 1862, a rare Carpenter Gothic mansion in Newmarket. Bride Natali began the day in the chair of makeup artist Chantelle Taylor, whose natural, effortless artistry brought out her glow without overshadowing her. When Natali stepped into her first gown by John Zimmerman, she looked radiant. Her groom Tomas, dressed in a perfectly tailored navy tuxedo by T.Begg Tailoring, completed the picture. Together, they looked as though they belonged in a storybook.
The second chapter moved to Alberton 1863, an Anglo-Indian style mansion rich with arches, staircases, and ornate detail. Here Natali wore a second Zimmerman gown, sculpted with delicate bead embroidery that echoed the textures of the heritage setting. Tomas changed into a classic black tuxedo by T.Begg Tailoring - sharp, stylish, and timeless. Surrounded by grand staircases and carved frames, the couple appeared to have stepped straight from the pages of history.
The final act of the day took place at Pah Homestead, home of The Arts House Trust. With its blend of history, art, and modern flair, it provided the perfect backdrop for Natali’s third gown - a sleek, contemporary dress with a sweeping train that still carried an air of elegance. Tomas, in his versatile black tuxedo, looked at ease in the setting, even noting the comfort of its adjustable waist from T.Begg Tailoring.
The shoot closed at sunset with golden light spilling across the gardens, the final touch of magic on a day filled with it.
Behind the scenes, the team credited the success to collaboration and artistry. Danni the photographer from Phoenix Weddings led the project.
