Leading Crypto Entrepreneur Joins NZ’s First Bitcoin Treasury Firm To Spearhead Listed Market Strategy
Last mile logistics software innovator Locate Technologies has appointed Easy Crypto’s Founder Janine Grainger to its board to help drive listed-market Bitcoin innovation.
Locate Technologies, the firm proposing to become New Zealand’s first Bitcoin treasury, has announced the appointment of crypto industry heavyweight Janine Grainger to help lead the company’s strategy as it prepares to list on the NZX.
Grainger co-founded Easy Crypto, New Zealand’s top-rated digital asset exchange, in 2018. Easy Crypto has grown to over 350,000 clients with more than NZD $4 billion in sales. The exchange expanded into Australia and South Africa before merging with Swyftx earlier this year and is well-known for innovative crypto products - including launching a New Zealand dollar stablecoin (NZDD) in 2023.
Locate Technologies is preparing to move its listing from the ASX to the NZX, citing close alignment with the New Zealand exchange and market. “This is an exciting opportunity to give Kiwis exposure to new digital currency products in a safe, regulated way. Having pioneered crypto access through Easy Crypto, I’m excited to help shape continued innovation for NZ in the digital asset sector,” comments Grainger.
Through the proposed listing, local investors will gain access to an innovative financial product, backed by Bitcoin and listed on the NZX. Grainger’s role will focus on product innovation and strategy, tapping into her deep experience in the fintech and blockchain sectors where she has contributed to both policy and trust frameworks as part of APEC’s Digital Trust Advisory Group and the V20 virtual asset summit. Her leadership has been recognised with awards including the ‘IBM Most Inspiring Individual Award’ at the 2023 Hi-Tech Awards, and as one of ten global winners of the NEAR Foundation’s Women in Web3 Changemakers award. She also serves on the Executive Council for FinTechNZ.
“Janine is no stranger to being first,” commented Steve Orenstein, Chief Executive of Locate Technologies. “Through Easy Crypto, she built trust in the local crypto ecosystem and made it safe for Kiwis to invest in digital assets. That leadership and track record of innovation are exactly what we need as we launch our Bitcoin treasury product. We’re proud to be working towards giving local investors access to a listed, innovative financial opportunity - one that would otherwise only be available through offshore markets.”
Spearheading Kiwi access to crypto innovation
Grainger believes the company’s entry into the local market is well-timed, saying “Bitcoin momentum has reached a crescendo in 2025, with increasing levels of institutional and retail interest. Around the world, regulators are shaping clearer frameworks, which is helping to propel adoption and legitimacy forward. Being an early mover positions Locate Technologies to give New Zealand investors a homegrown option at a time of peak interest.”
How a Bitcoin treasury works
Locate Technologies’ model is inspired by global leaders in this space such as MicroStrategy. MicroStrategy has become one of the world’s largest corporate holders of Bitcoin, now holding around 640,000 BTC worth tens of billions of US dollars. Its approach of issuing bonds and equity to continually acquire Bitcoin has delivered over 3,000 % share price growth in five years, outpacing Bitcoin itself. Orenstein noted that “This demonstrates the potential for treasury strategies to amplify returns for investors by creating financial products backed by digital assets.”
Locate Technologies’ strategy will allow it to deploy capital backed by Bitcoin and potentially offer products such as credit and debt instruments and other investment vehicles through the NZ debt market.
“Growing markets have multiple Bitcoin treasury firms - and now New Zealand will have its own. It makes sense to give Kiwis the choice to invest in a local option rather than an overseas one, particularly when the NZX can provide that access in a regulated and trusted way,” concludes Grainger.
