Whakatāne Interline Partnership A Milestone For Regional Connectivity
NZ Airports has welcomed today’s announcement of an interline partnership between Air Chathams and Air New Zealand, describing it as a key milestone for regional connectivity and economic growth in the Eastern Bay of Plenty.
From December, Air New Zealand customers will be able to book connecting flights to and from Whakatāne on Air Chathams, reconnecting the region to the national carrier’s network after ten years.
NZ Airports Chief Executive Billie Moore said the announcement highlights the importance of strong, connected air links to keep regional New Zealand “on the map.”
“This agreement will make it easier for people to travel to and from Whakatāne for work, education and family, and it strengthens the foundations for tourism and business investment across the region.
“The benefits will reach well beyond the airport itself, supporting growth and opportunity right across the Eastern Bay of Plenty.
“Major credit to Air New Zealand and Air Chathams for bringing this longstanding goal to fruition. It has required careful work to make domestic ticketing and baggage transfers possible, and we hope the partnership can build from here.
“While this is an independent decision made by the airlines, the government’s regional air connectivity support has played an important enabling role in making today’s announcement possible.”
The strong turnout from community and business leaders at today’s event shows how significant the development is for Whakatāne.
“It was fantastic to see local leaders out in force today at the iconic Whakatāne Airport terminal – a testament to how meaningful this is for the community.”
