TAANZ Urges Kiwis To Check Their Passports Ahead Of The Summer Travel Season

TAANZ Urges Kiwis to Check Their Passports Ahead of the Summer Travel Season

The Travel Agents’ Association of New Zealand (TAANZ) is urging Kiwis to check their passport expiry date so they don't get caught out at the airport or denied boarding.

If your New Zealand adult passport was issued in late 2015, it’s time to take a look — from November 2025, the first wave of 10-year New Zealand passports will begin to expire.

The Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) currently processes most passports within 10 working days, but the official timeframe is 20 working days. With thousands of renewals expected to hit the system at once, travellers who leave it too late could face longer wait times — or worse, find themselves unable to travel.

It’s easy to forget to check your passport, especially if you haven’t travelled overseas for a while. But with airlines and immigration rules often requiring 3–6 months’ validity beyond your return date, waiting too long can mean cancelled trips, denied boarding, or costly last-minute stress.

Why Check Now?

Many people book travel months ahead, not realising their passport must remain valid throughout their trip and for several months beyond. If your passport is due to expire before May 2026, you may be denied boarding if you plan to travel overseas from December 2025.

Another common trap is transit-country rules. Your destination may only need 3 months’ validity, but if you’re connecting through a country that requires 6 months (and a transit visa), you could be refused entry or boarding — even if your final stop is more lenient.

Checking early and renewing now ensures smooth sailing through check-in, transit, and border control.

When you book through a TAANZ-Accredited Travel Agent or Travel Advisor, they’ll ask for a copy of your passport. This is for your protection — to make sure:

Your airline tickets exactly match your passport name

You have the correct visas and entry permissions for every stop on your journey

Your passport and visa validity meet all airline and immigration requirements

It’s one of the many ways TAANZ-Accredited travel agents deliver peace of mind, checking the details that matter so you don’t have to.

TAANZ Travel Tips for Kiwi who have Self-Booked

  • Check your passport expiry date — especially if it expires within the next 12–18 months.
  • Double-check your booking matches your passport details exactly (no nicknames or abbreviations) to avoid being denied boarding.
  • Renew early to avoid delays as the 10-year renewal wave begins.
  • Remember: “3 months beyond departure” may not be accepted everywhere — allow a buffer.

Check entry requirements including transit-country immigration and airline requirements.

Even if you’re not travelling immediately, renewing early keeps your options open. Travel smart. Travel safe. Travel with Confidence – book with a TAANZ-Accredited Travel Agent.
