Invercargill Airport Runway Upgrade To Strengthen Safety And Future Growth

Invercargill Airport will commence an important runway upgrade programme in mid-January 2026 to ensure the region continues to benefit from safe, reliable, and future-ready air services.

The upgrade, last completed 15 years ago, is part of a regular renewal cycle and is expected to provide another 15 years of resilience. The project will involve night works over approximately thirty evenings to minimise disruption to daytime flights and airport users. While crews complete the upgrade, neighbouring residents may experience some after-hours noise.

Invercargill Airport acknowledges the temporary inconvenience and appreciates the community’s understanding as this work supports long-term safety and resilience for Southland’s air connections. The airport team emphasises that the project is another step in maintaining strong links between Southland and the rest of New Zealand and the world.

Invercargill Airport Chief Executive Stuart Harris says the project is both a commitment to the future and a sign of confidence in Southland’s growth.

“Investing in our runway is essential for protecting our long-term connectivity and ensuring we continue to meet the highest safety standards. This upgrade is a clear signal of confidence in our region and our role in supporting business, tourism, and community access. We know the night works will cause some short-term disruption for our neighbours, and for this, we are genuinely sorry. We appreciate the understanding of our community as we carry out work that will benefit Southland for many years to come.”

Fulton Hogan was the successful tenderer for the project. A specialist resurfacing team will travel from Christchurch to complete the work, supported by the local Invercargill crew. The team has delivered similar airfield upgrades at several major airports across New Zealand, bringing proven expertise to ensure the project’s success.

To ensure local residents have the opportunity to learn more, ask questions, and understand the scope of the upgrade, Invercargill Airport is hosting an invitation-only community meeting in the coming week.

Invercargill Airport appreciates the support of local residents and thanks the community for helping ensure Southland continues to fly forward.
