Wellington Businesses Encouraged To Have Their Say On Major Transport Upgrades
The Wellington Chamber of Commerce is encouraging the business community to provide feedback on the proposed SH1 Wellington Improvements, a key opportunity to help shape a long-term vision for the capital. The plans include a second Mount Victoria Tunnel, a duplicate Terrace Tunnel, and major upgrades around the Basin Reserve.
The proposed works aim to reduce congestion, improve travel reliability, and unlock economic growth for the region. These improvements will deliver faster, more predictable journeys between the CBD, Wellington Airport, and key employment hubs - essential for businesses that depend on efficient transport links.
The Chamber says local businesses should take this opportunity to have their say on how these projects will impact their operations, freight movement, and workforce connectivity.
Chamber CEO Hayley Horan says better connectivity and central Government investment are vital for Wellington’s future to attract talent, grow the economy, and keep the region competitive and resilient.
"The proposal from NZTA and the Minister represents up to $3.8 billion of infrastructure investment into Wellington. This is a significant opportunity for businesses to contribute to a long-term vision for our city.
"Our Green Light Economy report calls for investment in multimodal transport that meets the needs of commuters, businesses, and overall city mobility. The proposed improvements align with this vision by reducing congestion, improving reliability, and supporting multiple modes of transport.
"This project has been discussed for decades, and strong community support is clear."
A recent survey commissioned by Wellington Airport and conducted by Curia Market Research found 67% of Wellingtonians support building a second Mount Victoria Tunnel, while 74% support roading improvements around the Basin Reserve and Arras Tunnel.
"This is a once-in-a-generation investment that will shape how people and goods move across Wellington for decades. That’s why we encourage businesses to provide feedback, so their voices are heard, and the city can fully capitalise on the benefits," Ms Horan says.
