New $75 Million Anglesea Hospital Project Underway
Hamilton’s Anglesea Hospital, is expanding with the development of a new on-site orthopaedic hospital, in partnership with Evolution Healthcare and leading Anglesea Hospital specialists.
The $75 million project got underway earlier this month with earthworks and will feature four state-of-the-art operating theatres and 24 inpatient beds, including High Dependency Unit (HDU) capability.
The new orthopaedic hospital is being built on-site and is due for completion in Q4 2027.
Anglesea Hospital General Manager Nicky van Praagh says the development is designed to deliver an outstanding patient experience, guided by best-practice clinical standards and sustainable design principles.
“The new orthopaedic facility will transform the patient experience for healthcare services in the Waikato. Purpose-built spaces designed for recovery, advanced equipment and optimised patient flow will mean shorter surgery times, smoother admissions and much more comfortable recovery environments.
“Creating a centre of excellence in Hamilton with a specialised orthopaedic hub positions Anglesea as a leading destination for musculoskeletal surgery, supporting clinical innovation, research opportunities, and recruitment of high-calibre specialists, while also meeting growth for future healthcare demand. Part of this future-proofing includes the ability for a further 21 beds and two more operating theatres to be added to the new hospital when required.”
van Praagh says Evolution Healthcare – among the top three private healthcare providers in the country - is committed to building sustainable healthcare facilities that cater to community needs now and into the future.
This project represents the most significant expansion and addition of resources/capability to Anglesea Hospital since being established in 2007.
The Early Works contract has been awarded to a local contractor Commercial Constructions and includes Stage 1 earthworks, followed by Stage 2 in February next year. Stage 2 will involve the removal of the original hospital canopy, with access maintained via temporary shipping container walkways. The main contract works are yet to be awarded.
Hamilton’s Anglesea Hospital specialises in gynaecology, orthopaedic, general, plastics, ENT, paediatric, and urology surgery with a well-earned reputation for high-quality including for complex and advanced procedures.
