Summer Road Reno Returns: 450km Of Repairs To Keep Auckland Moving

Auckland Transport (AT) has launched its annual road maintenance programme for the summer season, aiming to repair and reseal over 450 kilometres of Auckland’s roads this summer with as little disruption and inconvenience to motorists as possible.

Warmer months and quieter periods on the roads during the Christmas break provide the best conditions to carry out the Summer Road Reno, which helps make roads safer, more durable and more resilient. This year the campaign will run between 29 December 2025 and 23 February 2026. Last summer, AT resurfaced 427km of roads - the most in eight years - and renewed 80km of footpaths, thanks to extra investment and resources from Auckland Council and the NZ Transport Agency.

GM Road Asset Maintenance & Renewals, Alan Wallace, says “We’re building on last summer’s success, where we resurfaced more than the distance between Auckland and Taihape. This year, we are targeting more than 450km to keep Auckland moving and make our roads safer and smoother to drive on.”

Some of the larger projects programmed for January are on major roads such as Great South Road, Chapel Road, Princes Street, Merton Road, Surrey Crescent, Hibiscus Coast Highway, Dairy Flat Highway, Alfriston Road, Lincoln Road and Portage Road.

AT’s key messages for Aucklanders:

  • This is important work to maintain and improve road safety and resilience.
  • Please drive carefully through work sites, obey the temporary speed limits and treat road workers with courtesy and respect.
  • For updates and more information, visit https://at.govt.nz/roadreno.

AT appreciates the patience of Aucklanders during this period and reminds drivers that this work is part of an organised programme to reduce bumps, cracks and potholes across the network.
