Pertronic Industries founder and managing director David Percy formally received the badge of the Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit at an investiture ceremony at Parliament on Wednesday 17 September.

He is pictured with Governor General Dame Cindy Kiro.

David Percy was the winner of the 2024 Gold Awards Icon Award. A tribute video of some of the many reasons behind his presentation is at the bottom of this Gold Awards page.

As outlined in the King’s Birthday Honours List, since starting Pertronic 43 years ago, the Lower Hutt headquartered production plant is the only operational New Zealand-based manufacturer of advanced automatic fire detection and alarm systems.

The citation mentions David’s commitment to relentless fire detection Research and Development, and recognition by fire protection associations for his contributions to the wider industry.

David is an Electrical Engineer and Fellow Member of Engineering NZ, and in addition to the ONZM, David has received multiple business and innovation awards.

“It is a great honour to be recognised at this level,” says David.

“Much of the credit should also be directed at the wider Pertronic team in New Zealand, Australia and the United States. Without everyone else’s contribution there would not be the products and business that help protect people and property.”

Since starting Pertronic Industries in a garage in Tawa, David’s emphasis on Research and Development and of building relationships with fire system installers and contractor has seen ongoing organic growth. When Pertronic began in 1982, there were six other fire panel manufacturers. Pertronic is the sole survivor.

As well as a high tech manufacturing plant at Wingate, Lower Hutt, Pertronic has sales and distribution offices in all of Australia’s major cities.

The company’s flagship F220 fire panel is used across car and rail tunnels, high rise buildings including apartments, government institutions, shopping malls and mining operations.

Pertronic has also recently launched in the United States. The company spent fire years gaining regulatory and compliance recognition for the F220. Because of the F220’s ease of installer programming, it is finding favour in America, confirming its acceptance in Australia and New Zealand.
