New Research Reveals The True City Centre Locations Across The Globe
- A new study from hotel chain Premier Inn has revealed the true city centres across the globe.
- The findings revealed that the city of London in the UK has a geometric centre sitting on Cambridge Street in Pimlico, not Trafalgar Square or the City of London as some may assume.
- Cities in Europe also had surprising midpoints, with Paris (France) having a centre located at Rue de l’Université, between the Seine and the Musée d’Orsay.
- The study expanded into other regions, including Asia, North and South America, Africa, and Oceania.
When exploring a new destination, most of us will instinctively head straight for the city centre. With shops, bars, restaurants and iconic landmarks, it’s where the action usually happens. And with many people planning their 2026 travel itineraries, many will be searching for the heart of the city to explore. But is the so-called “city centre” really at the centre at all? Or could we be missing the true midpoint of our favourite cities?
To find out, the team at Premier Inn calculated the geometric centre of cities across the globe, using mapping software and precise coordinate data, to pinpoint the exact centre of each city across the UK and the world.
The findings highlight the surprising truth about our urban geography, as in many cases, the places considered to be the ‘centre’ are actually some distance from a city’s true midpoint. In the UK, the geometric centre of Manchester was found to be the former St Ambrose Barlow School, home to the BBC drama Waterloo Road.
And when looking further afield, cities in Europe also had surprising midpoints, with Paris (France) having a centre located at Rue de l’Université, just between the Seine and the Musée d’Orsay. As well, LA’s geometric centre sits deep in the Angeles National Forest, not Downtown LA or Hollywood as some may assume.
Read on to find out where the true heart of some of the UK’s major cities lie.
