As the holidays wrap up and we get ready to head back to work and school, our pets might find the change in routine a little confusing. With the school term starting between late January and early February, many pets—especially those who have spent every minute with us over summer—might experience some "post-holiday blues" or separation anxiety.
Separation anxiety is more than just a bad habit; it’s a sign that our pets are feeling a bit overwhelmed by the sudden quiet at home. Symptoms like destructive chewing or extra barking are often just their way of telling us they're stressed.
"The best thing we can do for them is to start the transition slowly," says Taylor Jones, Head of Customer Care. "Try leaving the house for shorter blocks at a time now, so they get used to the idea that you always come back. Desensitising them to things like the sound of your keys or putting on your shoes can also help lower their stress before that first full day back".
To make their time alone a bit happier, Petdirect suggests creating a "safe haven" or a cosy den for them. There are some great tools that can help make this transition easier for everyone:
- Calming products: Using diffusers like Adaptil or Feliway can release a relaxing scent that helps pets feel more secure.
- A gentle hug: Products like Thundershirts provide a gentle, constant pressure that can be very soothing for anxious pets.
- Staying connected: Smart pet cameras let you check in from your phone and even toss them a treat, which helps you both feel more connected while you're away.
- Distraction and comfort: Cosy calming beds provide a perfect spot for a nap, while interactive puzzle toys and calming chews are great for keeping their minds busy during the day.
