One-Way Car Rental Services Gain Traction As Visitors Explore Multiple Destinations

New Zealand's passenger car rental industry continues to expand as visitor numbers climb and travel patterns shift towards multi-destination itineraries. IBISWorld reports that the market size of the Passenger Car Rental and Hiring industry reached NZ$2.3 billion in 2025, with 682 businesses operating nationwide. This growth reflects increasing demand from international tourists and domestic travellers seeking flexible transport options across both islands.

One-way rental arrangements have become particularly popular among visitors planning extended journeys between regions. Rather than returning vehicles to their original pickup location, travellers increasingly choose one way car hire in NZ to maximise their itinerary flexibility. This service model appeals to corporate groups travelling between cities for business purposes, families planning South Island road trips, and budget-conscious travellers exploring the country over extended periods.

Tourism hotspots have responded to changing visitor preferences by expanding vehicle availability and service offerings. Queenstown, recognised internationally as an adventure tourism destination, has seen particular growth in rental demand during ski season and peak summer months. Visitors arriving by air often turn to budget car hire in Queenstown for immediate access to transport without premium airport surcharges.

Providers such as NZRAC have expanded their branch network to accommodate one-way rental demand, with locations spanning Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown, and regional centres. According to Statista, approximately 26,700 rental cars were licensed for 12-month periods as of March 2024, indicating sustained fleet investment across the sector. Industry operators continue to adapt their service models to meet evolving traveller expectations, including additional driver inclusions and roadside assistance programmes designed for long-distance journeys.
