New Zealand's tourism sector continues its upward trajectory, with overseas visitor arrivals reaching 3.43 million in the year ending September 2025, according to the NZ Herald. The increase of 197,000 visitors compared to the previous year has intensified demand for specialised transport services, particularly during winter months when alpine conditions require appropriately equipped vehicles.
The surge in international visitors has prompted rental operators to expand their winter-focused offerings. Seasonal travellers heading to South Island ski destinations increasingly seek snow chain hire in NZ to navigate alpine routes safely, with Christchurch Airport serving as a primary gateway to mountain regions including Mt Hutt and Porters Pass. The emphasis on winter-ready vehicles reflects broader demand for reliable transport across varying terrain and weather conditions.
Group travel requirements have also intensified alongside rising visitor numbers, with families and corporate groups requiring larger capacity vehicles. Many operators have responded by prioritising access to 4WD hire in NZ through expanded fleet options, including eight-seater people movers suited to rugged rural roads and off-the-beaten-track exploration. NZRAC has positioned itself to meet this demand through its network of independently owned branches offering nationwide coverage.
Travel And Tour World reports that foreign tourism spending reached a record NZ$18.1 billion for the year ending March 2025, representing a 7% rise over the prior year. With tourism now accounting for approximately 8% of total GDP, the sector's recovery continues to drive investment in transport infrastructure and service capacity across both islands.
