Australia's Wellness Economy Fuels Demand For Home Infrared Sauna Installations

Australia's wellness economy grew at an annual rate of 10.9 percent in 2022-2023 to reach US$126.7 billion, according to the Global Wellness Institute's inaugural report on the Australian market released in August 2025. The country now ranks 10th globally for the size of its wellness economy and 7th in per capita spending, with Australians investing an average of US$4,824 per person annually on wellness-related products and services. Physical activity, wellness tourism and workplace wellness all feature among the country's strongest performing sectors. Within this broader landscape, at-home thermal therapy has emerged as one of the fastest-growing product categories, with infrared technology in particular gaining traction among consumers seeking recovery, stress reduction and preventative health benefits without the recurring costs of commercial spa memberships.

The shift toward residential wellness infrastructure is most visible in the country's two largest cities. In Sydney, where urban density and high-pressure professional lifestyles drive demand for convenient recovery solutions, consumers are increasingly investing in infrared sauna in Sydney installations as a permanent addition to home wellness spaces. The global infrared sauna market was valued at US$1.89 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach US$3.58 billion by 2032, expanding at a compound annual growth rate of 9.6 percent, according to Coherent Market Insights. Residential applications represented the dominant demand segment, with compact infrared units appealing to homeowners in metropolitan areas where space and energy efficiency are primary considerations.

Melbourne has followed a similar trajectory, with the city's established fitness culture and openness to holistic health practices providing fertile ground for infrared sauna adoption. Consumers seeking an infrared sauna in Melbourne are drawn to the technology's lower operating costs and faster heat-up times compared to traditional Finnish units. Mordor Intelligence reports that infrared cabin technology is advancing at a 9.98 percent CAGR through 2031, outpacing the broader sauna and spa market growth rate of 4.6 percent. The energy efficiency advantage is significant: infrared systems typically operate on 1.5 to 2 kilowatt heating elements with immediate usability, compared to the 4.5 kilowatt systems and 30 to 40 minute preheat times required by traditional saunas.

Providers such as Sunstream Saunas supply infrared sauna units across both cities, offering models designed for residential installation in a range of configurations from single-person cabins to larger multi-user units. With Australia's wellness spending trajectory showing no sign of slowing, and consumer preference continuing to shift toward home-based wellness solutions that offer both convenience and measurable health benefits, the residential infrared sauna segment is expected to remain one of the stronger performing categories within the broader wellness equipment market through 2026 and beyond.
