From SingleCoin Decisions To Portfolio Construction In Digital Assets

For some investors, digital assets seem to be shifting from single coin decisions to portfolio construction, as they understand there are different categories and sectors within the ecosystem.

Scott Lester, Director at Crossgate Capital, a New Zealand firm focused on investing in a digital asset portfolio, commented: "We consider how each asset plays a role within a broader system, when building our portfolio.

"Digital assets operate across a range of use cases that extend beyond a single narrative. Some assets function as stores of value, others support decentralised applications, while a separate group underpins infrastructure such as data services or financial protocols," he says.

A category-led view of the market

Lester says the conversation around digital assets, for some investors, appears to be shifting from 'should I buy Bitcoin?' to questions about how different parts of the market fit together.

"A few years ago, most discussions started and ended with a single coin. Today, more investors are increasingly aware that the ecosystem includes distinct categories, each with its own role, drivers and risk profile. Treating them as one undifferentiated asset class can mean missing the structure that sits underneath."

That structure is what informs the way Crossgate Capital builds its portfolio. The firm has been a specialist crypto investor since 2019, actively managing a diversified portfolio that includes established market leaders such as Bitcoin and Ethereum alongside other carefully selected assets considered consistent with its investment approach. The portfolio currently holds 13 digital assets across a range of categories, including established names alongside more specialised holdings.

"We ask what function an asset performs in the wider system, how established that function is, and how the asset complements what we already hold. The aim is a portfolio where the components work together, rather than a collection of isolated assets."

Diversification in digital assets

Lester says Crossgate Capital’s approach to diversification in digital assets is not just simply about owning more coins.

"We consider holding multiple assets that all behave the same way is not diversification. We look at diversification by gaining exposure to different categories, assets with different use cases and different drivers of demand. That is where the discipline of portfolio construction becomes important."

When Crossgate Capital considers a crypto asset for its portfolio, it must have a market capitalisation of at least NZD $500 million at the time of purchase. Holdings are secured in cold storage through BitGo.

"Risk management is not separate from portfolio construction, it is part of it," Lester says. “Applying a minimum market capitalisation threshold at the time of purchase, partnering with BitGo, a global provider of institutional storage for crypto assets and being deliberate about category exposure are all part of how we approach risk.”

Lester is also clear that no amount of structure removes the underlying risk of the asset class. "Digital assets remain a highrisk, volatile investment. Prices can move sharply in either direction”, he says.

A New Zealand lens on a global market

As a Kiwi company and Registered Financial Service Provider, Crossgate Capital says its role is to make a complex global market more accessible to New Zealand investors who want professional management rather than a doityourself approach.

"Many New Zealanders are curious about digital assets but don't want to spend their evenings choosing wallets, comparing exchanges or working out which categories matter," Lester says. "We aim to turn that complexity into something more straightforward, a professionally managed, diversified portfolio they can understand."

He adds that the shift toward portfolio thinking is, in his personal view, a healthy sign for the sector.

"When investors start asking about categories, sectors and how assets relate to each other, I consider the conversation becomes more grounded. It moves away from hype around any single coin and toward the question that matters in any asset class: how do the parts fit together, and what role does each one play?"
