HONG KONG & NZ - CUSTOMS TALKS IN WELLINGTON

A delegation led by Hong Kong Commissioner of Customs, Mr John Tsang, ( pron Jung ) is in Wellington for formal talks with the New Zealand Customs Service.

The 3rd Customs Co-operation Conference between Hong Kong and New Zealand is being held at the Customhouse Wellington. Today's welcome for the Commissioner and his delegation, was attended by Hon John Luxton, Minister for Food, Fibre, Biosecurity and Border Control.

The New Zealand delegation is led by the Comptroller of Customs Mr Robin Dare.

Over two days, there'll be discussions on the new computerised Air Cargo Clearance system at Hong Kong airport, the impact of electronic service delivery, relocation of the Regional Intelligence Liaison Office ( RILO ) to Tokyo, and the level of narcotics trafficking in Hong Kong and New Zealand.

Recent major developments at Chek Lap Kok airport, and the formation in Hong Kong of a special task force to tackle trading in illicit fuels, pirated video/CD's, and computer software are also on the bilateral talks agenda.

New Zealand enjoys a strong bilateral relationship with Hong Kong Customs. A formal Co-operative Arrangement signed in 1991 was reaffirmed in 1995. The New Zealand Customs Service was hosted by Hong Kong in 1997.
