Free afternoon talks - Sunday 5 November

The story of Parihaka and the teachings of its two leaders, Te Whiti o Rongomai and Tohu Kakahi, have inspired some of this country's most searching artworks. Artists and art historians talk about the influence of this remarkable place, this Sunday.

Sunday 5 November, 1 pm: Art History of Parihaka Some artists in Aotearoa / New Zealand have a personal connection to Parihaka. Others have purposely made a place for Parihaka in their work. Lecturer in Art History at Canterbury, Dr Deidre Brown looks at the different 'ways of seeing' Parihaka, its people, and its events, as presented in recent art, architecture, design and non-fiction writing. In this illustrated lecture, Dr Brown will discuss works in the current exhibition, alongside others.

Sunday 5 November, 3 pm: Artists in Conversation with Jonathan Mane-Wheoki and Roma Potiki Traditions grow and evolve, with artists often interpreting key events, ideas and proposing possible futures. Fred Graham, Natalie Robertson, John Walsh and Darcy Nicholas, whose works are included in the exhibition, discuss their response to Parihaka. There will also be a debate on some of the key issues for contemporary Maori art.
