ANZAC Day Service To Be Televised

The Anzac Day wreath-laying ceremony at the National War Memorial in Wellington will be broadcast live this year thanks to funding from NZ On Air.

Anzac Day 2001 will mark the 86th anniversary of the day Australia and New Zealand troops landed on Gallipoli with overwhelming casualties and loss of life. April 25th has become a national day of remembrance in both countries every year since.

“The televised service will allow hundreds of war veterans who are no longer able to attend their own local services to be part of this day of remembrance,“ said NZ On Air Chief Executive, Jo Tyndall.

“Anzac Day is becoming increasingly important for younger New Zealanders, as is evident in the increased numbers attending ceremonies around the country each year.”

“We have funded the broadcast of Anzac Day services in previous years and it is pleasing to note that last year’s audience was double that of the year before, indicating a strong national interest in this commemorative event,” said Ms Tyndall.

The Anzac Day service will include addresses, readings and music from the Wellington Cathedral Choir.
