The year’s most anticipated movie, Harry
Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone has had a record breaking
weekend proving it is a truly worldwide phenomenon.
The movie broke New Zealand box office records this weekend grossing $1,523,692 the biggest opening weekend of all time.
This beats Star Wars the Phantom Menace which grossed $1,380,210 in June 1999 and Independence Day which grossed $1,212,015 in August 1996.
The movie which was released nationally on Thursday November 29, 2001 has had rave reviews from little and big muggles across the country.
Roadshow Film Distributors General Manager, Lisa Hubbard said, “We are thrilled with the success of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone over the opening weekend, and delighted that New Zealand audiences have embraced this truly magical movie”.
