L’Oréal Professionnel announces
New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year 2002

Hairdressers from Ryder Salon in Auckland won two of the big awards at last night’s L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy Awards 2002, which was officially opened by the Prime Minister Helen Clark.

Craig Hughan was named New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year, receiving the Supreme Award, and Angela Fisken, also of Ryder Salon, took away the Couleur Pour Hommes Award for men’s colour.

The winner of the Young Colourist Award was Adelle Rodda of Servilles in Mission Bay.

It was the culmination of a hectic day for the three winners and the 13 other finalists. They had just three hours to recreate the looks in their photographic portfolios using their original models, ready for judging late yesterday.

The models were then part of a glittering gala event at the Auckland Town Hall. Also on show were the summer collections of top New Zealand fashion houses Carlson, Karen Walker, Kate Sylvester, Nom D, Natalija Kucija and Trelise Cooper. The hair and the fashion were complemented by some of the best in local music and dance, including a post-event party with DJ Cuz.

The prize package for the New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year includes an expenses-paid trip to Paris, with a VIP visit to the home of L’Oréal, transfers to London and tickets to the United Kingdom’s L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy Awards (prize package worth $5000), as well as media training and a publicity package estimated at more than $40,000.

The judges for this year’s awards were:
 Clark York, winner of the Supreme Award at the inaugural L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy Awards in 1994 and owner of Willis/York Hairdressing in Wellington
 Stephanie Limbrick, former New Zealander and owner of Glow salon in Sydney
 Maurice Meade, owner of eight successful Perth salons
 Mark Stapleton, Sydney-based editor with 10 years’ experience on top hairdressing magazines Highlights and Noise.

Maurice Meade says he was “overwhelmed by the standard of hairdressing in this country”.

“Hair colour has been very important for a number of years and it’s as strong as ever – and the work I’ve seen in this competition is right up there with the rest of the world. New Zealand hairdressers have a lot to be proud of.”

More than 350 hairdressers from around New Zealand submitted photographic portfolios for the initial judging in June. All these entries were also considered for the two magazine awards.

The Style Magazine Award was won by Craig Stinson of George Janis Hairdressing in Wellington; the entry was also a finalist in the Supreme Award.

The team from Kraniums Hair Salon in Howick won The Headway Magazine Award and the new Team ‘Total Look’ Award. The Kraniums team is: Darcie Walker (stylist), Kristy Davies (colourist) and Lisa Rutherford (make-up).

The Team ‘Total Look’ Award was introduced in recognition of the fact that in many salons now a colourist, a stylist and a senior consultant will often pool their talents to create a client’s look, rather than working individually. Like the Headway and Style magazine awards, the Team Award is judged solely from the photographic portfolios.

The L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy Awards are held around the world, and are internationally respected for demonstrating the future of hair fashion. All of the winners announced at last night’s awards will have an effect on the way New Zealanders wear their hair for the next season and beyond.

Taking out the Supreme Award will have a positive impact on Craig Hughan’s career for many years to come.
