Hero participants invited to Cuba Street Carnival

It's not over for participants in Auckland's Hero Parade, with Wellington's Cuba Street Carnival sending an invitation to Hero-goers.

The Hero Parade won't run any longer after the Auckland City Council and sponsors withdrew funding for the event, while the Cuba Street Carnival continues to grow, with sponsorship by TV2 and support from the Wellington City Council.

Cuba Street Carnival Director Chris Morley-Hall says the celebration of diversity at Hero will transfer easily to the Cuba Street Carnival.

"We are inviting Hero participants to come to Wellington and join carnival-goers from all over New Zealand and overseas at our Night Parade and New Zealand's largest free street festival.

"While everyone will be sad to see Hero end, the fun and celebration of diversity that it represented will continue in Cuba Street."

The TV2 Cuba Street Carnival is New Zealand's largest free festival, taking over Wellington on 21, 22 and 23 February. One of the highlights is the Saturday night TV2 Night Parade. The 2002 parade recently won a Creative New Zealand Award in its 'celebrating cultural identity and diversity' category.
