TVNZ (New Zealand) Journalist Wins Inaugural RANZCR Media Award

Ms Loreli Mason of TVNZ (New Zealand) has been awarded the inaugural 'Television Media Award' from The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists for her television news segment which followed two breast cancer patients travelling to Sydney for private radiation treatment following surgery earlier in the year - a result of the shortage of therapists and radiation oncologists in New Zealand's six cancer units.

The Television Award was made jointly to Ms Sheryl Taylor of Channel 9 Sydney for her presentation of a USA study in which PET technology was being used to diagnose Alzheimers - local radiologists reported that PET scanning offered a real prospect of early diagnosis.

Daily Telegraph joumalist, Anna Patty, received the 'Print Media Award' for her article which appeared on 13 February 2002 in the Daily Telegraph titled: ‘ Funds Needed to Train Specialists'.

An Award was not made in the Radio Category this year.

Criteria for these Awards was the journalist's ability to give readers/viewers/listeners a greater awareness and understanding of the importance and value to the community of the work of Australian and/or New Zealand Radiologists and Radiation Oncologists.

The Awards were announced in Adelaide on Saturday, October 5 at the 53rd Annual Meeting of the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Radiologists, Over 650 Radiologists attended the Meeting to hear the latest research on radiology and radiation oncology treatment aspects from New Zealand, Australia and overseas.
