Mangere Winner Strikes The Jackpot Twice With Lotto And Powerball

A Mangere winner who wishes to remain anonymous has made Lotto history this week by winning Lotto first division twice in one week and Powerball - taking home $4.1 million in prize money.

The winner selected their own regular numbers and then ran them on both a Powerball ticket and a Lotto ticket. According to the Lotteries Commission General Marketing Manager Vanessa Ellis this is the first time in the history of the game, that a customer has won 1st Division in Powerball and Lotto on two separate tickets.

“What a wonderful way to start 2003, good luck has definitely come in twice for this Lotto player,” says Vanessa Ellis.

“This week’s Powerball win highlights the fact that Powerball can be won at any time - and you just never know when it’s going to be won,” says Vanessa Ellis.

This weekend (Draw 810 January 10, 2003) marks the 100th Powerball draw since the game was introduced in February 2001. Since then Powerball has made 9 multi-millionaires, with the biggest prize in New Zealand history of $11.5 Million won in November last year in Hokitika.

The winning Powerball amounts have been spread all over the country with a Whangarei $8.3 million Powerball in July 1999, a $6.8 million Mairangi Bay Auckland winner and a Lower Hutt couple won $6.3 million in June last year.

“We’re delighted with the fact that we’ve made yet another multi-millionaire this week and we hope to make even more this year,“ adds Ellis.

The winning tickets were sold at the Lotto outlet United Video Mangere in Manukau City.
