Trapped? In a box? Potted into a role you don’t like?

Two Fringe 2003 productions ask the same questions but tackle the issue in entirely different ways.

“Potted” by the Oily Rag Theatre is a European style farce that tells the story of people trapped in an office and a way of life they don’t know how to escape.

Potted shows characters having to play the corporate game and survive in a bizarre environment of management and strange practices.

Cubed starts from the premise, Are you in a box and don’t know what to do?

“Cubed” from Xact Services is a funky, dynamic duo of drumming and dance with Cuban, African and Spanish influences incorporating people of mixed abilities from Xact Services in the Hutt Valley.

Cubed asks about inclusion and exclusion. It asks what happens when someone steps outside the status quo.

Sam Fisher of Potted says “I was struck talking to the producer from Cubed just how similar the starting points were but how different the results. One is a play the other a dance piece, but both deal with being boxed and judged”.

Sally Darragh of Cubed said, “The Fringe Festival is a great opportunity to see different ways of tackling similar themes and it is good to see such a diverse range of performance styles. Our piece works with people who have different abilities and looks at how they are seen and fit in.
