Rare South Pole publication fetches 14,400stg

A rare copy of the South Polar Times, editor and printed by Ernest Shackleton, fetched 14,400stg at auction in London early today.

The first edition of the publication, inscribed by the famous polar explorer, is dated July 26, 1907, and went under the hammer at Sothebys auction. Shackleton gave the first edition of three volumes to C H Bland, and wrote ``with kind regards from the first year's Editor and Printer E H Shackleton''. Six volumes of Captain James Cook's books adventures toward the South Pole and around the Pacific failed to reach reserve. They were expected to make 9000stg.

The narratives for the books were written aboard the Resolution and the Discovery between 1772 and 1780. They include charts, plates and maps, featuring New Zealand.
