Wellington band lights up cold winter's night

Wellington band lights up cold winter's night

This Saturday kiwi rockers Verona are planning to turn Civic Square into a giant living room.

The outdoor performance, which is sponsored by the Wellington City Council, will celebrate the close of New Zealand music month.

Verona front man Daniel Adams says they're encouraging people to show up with sofas, chairs, rugs, lazy-boys, bean bags, and anything else they might categorise as lounge furniture. "We're hoping to inject a little warmth into a frosty winter night."

Verona made a big impact on Wellington's music scene last year with their Shakespeare inspired show 'Storm', which scooped the award for best music of the Fringe in 2002. They're currently working with Downstage Theatre to prepare a show for the 2003 International Festival based on the idea of 'geographical cure'. "It's a series of vignettes about people getting away to escape their troubles and improve their lives," says Adams. The show includes actors, computer animation and, of course, a live rock band.

Adams' advice to Wellington music fans looking to check them out on Saturday night? "Wrap up in your winter woollies, bring a blanket, bring the kids and make sure you bring the sofa."
