Friday Arvo Surf Update

The Friday Arvo Surf Update

Brought to you by.. http://www.nzxsports.com

Hi Alistair,

Good afternoon, not a real lot happening this weekend. Surf wise, it is looking dismal and we have to wait until Monday to watch the Maori's take on the English in New Plymouth. Naturally we wish the lads the best of luck.

1. Weather Situation
2. Regional Report
3. Surf Pad of the Week

Weather Situation

I know I have said this before, but we have a complicated weather map. Unbelievably, we have a tropical cyclone forming off the coast of Northern Queensland and we will keep you posted on what is happening with this little beast. A real complex group of fronts and lows sitting just off the West Coast, about to go under the South Island. This will give us the reboot of swell on the West Coast. The low that was producing the swell on the south facing and eastern beaches, continues to head further to the east. A high is squatting on part of us and has a west northwest airflow associated with it, which looks like hanging around all weekend.

Regional Report

North Island

Northland; Auckland; Coromandel; Waikato; B.O.P:

West Coast: Horrible west to northwest winds this afternoon, with a lumpy west to southwest swell of 2-4 feet. We are expecting the swell to build tomorrow. It is looking like northwest winds finally swinging to the north, Sunday arvo. It's back to northwest on Monday. Would be surprised to see a solid 6 foot tomorrow. HT 1355.

East Coast: It is not looking that promising for waves this weekend on this coast. We have a small dribbly 1 foot of northwest wind swell. We will see a little northwest wind swell in the eastern Bay of Plenty. Northwest to west winds with a flick to the north Sunday arvo and then back to the west by Monday. HT 1155.

Gisborne; Wairarapa:

Small waves this weekend with southwest swell of 1-2 feet and northwest to west winds for most of the weekend. We might just see a little lift in the swell Sunday morning from the south - Don't expect too much though. HT 1020.

Taranaki:

West to northwest swell in town with west to southwest down the coast. Onshores all weekend from the West. The only window of opportunity, is late Sunday arvo when the wind could swing northerly for a while. HT 1555.

Wellington:

West Coast; Northwest to westerly onshores for the weekend and dribbly 1-2 feet northwest wind swell. Not a lot on offer.

South Coast; Offshores all weekend here with the wind finally swinging to the southwest on Monday. Small south swell 1-2 feet and easing. HT 0935.

South Island

West Coast:

Easing west to southwest swell that gets a rekick on Sunday morning. West to southwest winds all weekend. Small 2-3 feet and messy this arvo. HT 1510.

Kaikoura; Canterbury:

Northeast onshores in town today and northeast wind swell 1-2 feet at the most. It is not looking good this weekend, the little south swell that had been around for days has finally eased away. The forecast is for west to northwest winds over the weekend. Kaikoura is finally flat, well dam near. We have the smallest remnants of the south swell, and a northerly wind filtering down from the Cook Strait region. HT 0920.

Dunedin; Southland:

South swell of 1-2feet this arvo, that doesn't look that wonderful. Northeast winds are forecast to get quite strong this arvo and tomorrow and then flick to the northwest. We should see northeast swell develop on north facing beaches. HT 0615.

Surf Pad of the Week

It's not a long weekend, but why not escape the winter blues and head to The Mount for the weekend. Check out the Mount Maunganui Backpackers within a hop, skip & jump from the surfing beach.
