New Zealand Wins First Golds At The 2003 World Summer Games

New Zealand has won two gold medals in the women and men’s team ten pin bowling finals at the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games.

Up against the US and Ireland in the women’s final, the New Zealand team bowled a combined score of 1208, walloping the United Sates in second place by more than 130 points. The men bowled an impressive 1706, fending off a strong come back from the Australians to win by 95 points.

Special Olympics Executive Director and Head of Delegation for the Games, Chris Hooper, says this is the start of many great success to come in the next few days.

“Our ten pin bowlers can be extremely proud of themselves, they’ve competed against the world’s best Special Olympic ten pin bowlers and won gold in convincing style,” he said.

The winning women’s team is Ann Fairhurst (Taranaki), Helen Coring (Auckland), Lynley North (Waikato) and Mandy Sandbrook (Manawatu).

The winning men’s team is Robert McElwee (Auckland), Steven Roberts (Auckland), Steven James (Waikato) and Darren Gordon (Auckland).

The New Zealand team in the last 48 hours has amassed two gold medals and one bronze.
