Simpson Grierson Presents Everyday Miracles

Simpson Grierson is delighted to bring Aucklanders an exhibition of works by influential British modernist painter Sir Stanley Spencer titled ‘Everyday Miracles.’

Simpson Grierson is principal sponsor of the exhibition which opens at the Auckland Art Gallery on July 5. It’s a collection of Spencer’s religious studies, portraits and landscapes many of which demonstrate his meticulous attention to detail.

Spencer lived his entire life in the small town of Cookham, painting what he observed around him. Detailed landscape studies and portraiture became the launching point for grand scale biblical narratives, where the local residents were portrayed as apostles, saints and angels.

Spencer is now acknowledged as one of the great British modernist painters but his influence went largely unrecognised during his lifetime. He was knighted only in his final year. Some of the works on display formed part of a recent exhibition at London’s Tate Gallery. A special feature of the exhibition will be the Tate’s recent digital recreation of Spencer’s ‘Church-House’, a unique live-in church which Spencer planned but never realised.
