Silkworm Productions presents a Chinese New Zealand solo show written and devised by Sonia Yee, in collaboration with Director Nina Nawalowalo.

The Wholly Grain is a highly visual, text-based, multi-character solo show interweaving ancient Chinese legend and the story of a contemporary Chinese NZ family. Set in a fish 'n¹ chip shop, the audience journeys beyond the takeaway, travelling through time to the old world of superstition and the story of a princess from the influential Chinese Han Dynasty. Both in the historical and contemporary settings, traditional roles and values are challenged by two young women, as they struggle against the conflict of cultural expectation and belonging.

Sonia Yee is a recent graduate from Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School, and the first NZ-Chinese woman to graduate as an actor. The Wholly Grain is a New Zealand Chinese theatre piece which explores themes of family duty and identity, and the consequences when tradition and cultural values are challenged and turned upside down.

The Wholly Grain is a simple story about listening to one¹s heart, and what it means to find your way home.
