Building on the success of last year’s Minter Ellison Rudd Watts Spring Season, the Auckland Philharmonia has designed another vibrant and diverse series over consecutive Friday nights in November – the Auckland Town Hall will be overflowing with colour, and the music will have you tapping your feet, if not dancing in the aisles.
The first concert, on 14 November, sees the Auckland Philharmonia and Maestro Taddei putting on their spurs and heading for the Wild West. Shotgun-toting Helen Medlyn joins the orchestra for a programme that traverses American art song to music theatre classics. This will be a thigh-slapping evening of Wild West Americana!
Fiesta Latina, on 21 November, sees conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya back in his exotic homeland of colourful rhythms and fiestas. Jason Vieaux returns to the Auckland Philharmonia to perform two Guitar Concerti by leading Latin American composers Manuel Ponce and Roberto Sierra, and en route from Mexico to Peru, Cachita, Huapango and Sones de Mariachi are just some of the works in this vibrant programme.
The journey ends on 28 November with Miguel and the orchestra in the heart of Buenos Aires, with a programme dedicated to the most sensuous dance in the world, the tango. Tango Milonga will be full of energy and passion, with guest artists Horacio Romo and Justine Cormack performing Tango Concerti for Bandoneón and Violin, and some of the finest tango dancers in town providing spectacular entertainment.
To set the mood for each concert, themed pre-concert entertainment is performed in the Town Hall foyers.
