New Zealand School of Dance graduate knighted

Christchurch born Martin James, a graduate of the New Zealand School of Dance, was today awarded a knighthood in Copenhagen from the Queen of Denmark to honour his excellence over the years as a principal dancer with the Royal Danish Ballet.

"I am delighted, surprised and extremely honoured for something that one never expects," Martin said. "I am nervous for I am aware of this very special honour and the significance it holds for my country as one of New Zealand's ambassadors."

New Zealand School of Dance director, Garry Trinder, spoke of the significance of James' achievement:

"Martin James graduated from the New Zealand School of Dance in 1980 and has since proved himself to be a versatile classical dancer and, latterly, a generous teacher and coach. He has commanded an international career few can rival and made our profession richer for the uplifting and human experience of his performances. I feel sure everyone in New Zealand joins me in saluting Martin on receiving this gesture of recognition. The School is extremely proud to see one of its graduates lauded in this manner."
