Okinawan Performing Arts concert at Auck Town Hall
Okinawan Performing Arts concert to be held at the
Auckland Town Hall
An evening of Okinawan Performing Arts will be held at the Concert Chamber of the Auckland Town Hall on Sunday, February 29 from 7.30 pm. The performance of Okinawan folk dance will be given by the dance company: Fusaku Shida Dance Company and Yukito Ara. Admission will be free.
The Okinawan Group of islands stretches south of the Japanese mainland and has a warm sub-tropical climate. It has a long history as a major trading centre between Japan and the Asian mainland, which led to dynamic cultural exchange and the development of a distinct indigenous traditional Okinawan culture. The dance forms of the Fusaku Shida Dance Company and Yukito Ara bear spectacular testimony to this.
The dances themselves relate narratives of daily life in Okinawa and with the use of traditional music, skillful choreography and sumptuous, boldly coloured costumes, headgear and props, the everyday is made exceptional.
The group is touring through other parts of Asia and Australasia and will include two free concerts in Wellington.
The event is being sponsored by The Consulate-General of Japan and The Japan Foundation, with generous support from The Edge.
