Hot Cakes - Tickets Sales Take Off

Disappointed ballet fans will be turned away from tonight's final performance by Ballet Nacional de Espana. The show has been declared a total sell-out. Last night's penultimate performance by the immensely popular troupe was also a packed house.

The flamenco dance stars have wowed audiences and reviewers alike with their empassioned five-night season at the Westpac St James Theatre. Standing ovations, stamping of feet and calls for encores have ended each performance.

Festival Chief Executive David Inns says sales 'take off' as word spreads about the quality of the shows on offer.

'This is typical of the way things have gone in past years. Once people start reading the reviews and hear their friends raving about the shows there is a rush for tickets. Unfortunately we can only accommodate so many. Some people are always going to miss out.'

In the past few days Festival offices have been deluged with phone calls from public and media agencies desperate to get tickets for the final ballet performance.

Other sell-outs in the 2004 programme include Brunch with Clive James (a New Zealand Post Writers and Readers Week event), local singer-songwriter Greg Johnson, English singer Kate Dimbleby, Belgian ensemble Capilla Flamenca, The Songmaker's Chair and the National Youth Choir.

Many other shows are selling well and look set to follow in the steps of the Spanish Ballet. Hot sellers include Cookin', The Stabat Mater, Abdullah Ibrahim, The Junebug Symphony, Tan Dun and Animal Farm.
