Mt Ruapehu Delays Turoa Opening Till Tomorrow
Mt Ruapehu Delays Turoa Opening
For immediate release 17
June 2004
The opening of the Turoa Ski Area on Mt Ruapehu has been delayed until Tuesday 22 June, due to forecast poor weather conditions over the upcoming weekend.
Mt Ruapehu Marketing Manager, Mike Smith, says heavy rain in the last 24 hours, together with predictions of warmer temperatures and more rain have caused the delay.
“We’ve had some great snowmaking weather last week and have achieved a good snow stockpile, but with the weekend’s poor weather forecast ahead we’ve decided to delay opening to protect the snow we have,” says Mr Smith.
“Our most recent long-range forecast shows freezing levels dropping and snow from Sunday, so Turoa will open on Tuesday weather permitting. Whakapapa should open as planned on Friday 25 June.”
