Andrew Mhertens Is An ‘Official’ Canterbury Icon

Its ‘official’ Andrew Mhertens is one of Canterbury’s most loved icons. A radio promotion by Wises Maps revealed this week that Andrew Mhertens is second only to Jade Stadium as the region’s most loved icon.

The promotion, to uncover local icons for the new Wise’s Christchurch and Canterbury map-book, revealed that Mhert’s is rated just after Jade Stadium but in front of Hagley Park, the New Brighton Pier and the Port Hills Gondola.

The timing of the findings capped off a great week for the Canterbury 1st five, who earned a recall to the All Blacks starting fifteen to face the Springboks this weekend.

“I don’t know how we are going to represent Mhert’s in the mapbook,” said Wises Maps marketing manager Paul Flatt. “The last thing Andrew Mhertens is is an inanimate object.

“It proves how passionate Cantabrians are about their rugby and how popular Andrew Mhertens is in the region.”

Flatt said they now faced the challenge of putting one of the country’s most dynamic and popular sports stars ‘on the map’. He welcomes any suggestions.
