Lotto Winning Wheel's fifth winner, Robert Coates from Oamaru, has won $100,000 on tonight's live Lotto Draw, announced Warren Salisbury, Deputy Chief Executive of New Zealand Lotteries Commission.
"It's unreal," said Mr Coates, a touring motorbike enthusiast. "On Monday I'm paying off a new motorbike and putting the rest in the bank."
Mr Coates had not told his extended family about his win.
"I sent a text message to apologise for not coming to my brothers 40th birthday party tonight and said that if they watched the Lotto draw, they would understand," he said.
Mr Coates' best friend of 30 years, Dave Gresham, flew to Wellington to be with him for his Winning Wheel experience and was at Avalon Studio's for the live Lotto draw.
This week was a Winning Wheel bonus week with six Winning Wheel serial numbers being drawn instead of one.
"We've had a great response from players to Winning Wheel, and by having a bonus week we've given more of them the chance to come on to Saturday's Lotto draw and win one of our cash or non-cash prizes valued at an average of $220,000," said Mr Salisbury.
